Headlight restoration

Clear lenses, without a trip to the shop.

Yellowed, hazy headlights cleared where the car is parked — booked on its own, added to a detail, or already included if you are taking Showroom + Protect.

What is actually happening

It is the plastic, not the bulb.

Most people replace a bulb first and are disappointed. Here is why, and what the yellow really is.

They look yellow in daylight

The lens is polycarbonate with a factory UV coating on the outside. Years of sun break that coating down and the plastic underneath starts to oxidise, which is what the yellow actually is. It is a surface problem, which is why it can be dealt with.

They look cloudy at night

A hazed lens scatters the beam instead of throwing it down the road. The bulb has not got dimmer — the light is going in every direction except the one you need it in, which is why a new bulb usually disappoints.

They date an otherwise tidy car

Two clouded lenses at the front of a car with clean paint read as neglect from across a parking lot. It is the single cheapest-looking thing on an otherwise well-kept vehicle, and the first thing a buyer's eye lands on.

The honest part

Nobody can tell you how many years.

This is the claim the rest of the industry makes up, so it is worth being plain about.

Restoration removes the oxidised layer and refinishes the lens underneath, then a protective step goes over the top. That is a real repair and the difference is immediate and obvious.

What it is not is permanent. The car goes back outside the same afternoon and the sun starts on the new surface straight away. A car that sleeps in a garage will hold the result far longer than one that spends every day pointed at a south-facing driveway, and the difference between those two is bigger than the difference between any two products on the market.

So SoloSpa does not put a number of years on this page. Zachariah will give you his read on your specific lenses when he looks at them, including the times the answer is that replacement is the better spend — a cracked lens or a unit fogging from the inside is a seal problem, and no amount of polishing the outside touches it.

On its own, or in a package

Two ways to get to the same result.

Whichever way you book it, it is the same job on the same lenses — the difference is only what else is happening to the car that day.

On its own

One visit, one job, one number. Right if the rest of the car is fine and the lenses are the thing bothering you — or if you are getting it ready to sell and this is the last item on the list.

Inside Showroom + Protect

Showroom + Protect already includes “headlight and trim restoration” alongside the full inside-and-out detail. If you are booking that, the lenses are covered — do not buy this twice.

Ask about Showroom + Protect

Engine bay cleaning is the other job Zachariah takes on its own. Both are worth asking about together if the car is going up for sale.

Headlight questions

Questions about restoration.

Can I book headlight restoration on its own?

Yes. It is quoted as its own job rather than being trapped inside a package, and it can also be added to a detail you are already booking. If you are booking Showroom + Protect, it is already included — no need to buy it twice.

How long do restored headlights stay clear?

Honestly: it depends on the car, and nobody who quotes you a number in years is measuring anything. Restoration takes off the oxidised layer and refinishes what is under it, then a protective step goes over the top — but the lens is back outside in the sun the same afternoon, and UV starts working on it again. A car that lives in a garage holds it far longer than one parked on a driveway facing south. Zachariah will tell you what to expect for your car rather than quote you a warranty he cannot back.

Is it better to just replace the headlights?

Sometimes, and he will say so. Restoration works on a lens that is oxidised on the outside. It does not fix a cracked lens, a unit that has fogged internally because its seal has failed, or condensation that keeps coming back — those are replacement jobs, and polishing them is money spent on a problem that is not on the surface.

Will it pass a safety inspection afterwards?

That is a licensed inspector's call, not a detailer's, and SoloSpa does not issue or influence one. What the service does is remove the haze and restore clarity to a lens that had lost it. If a specific inspection requirement is what is driving this, tell Zachariah when you ask for the quote so he can be straight with you about whether restoration is likely to be enough.

Do you publish a price?

No. Two lightly hazed lenses on a five-year-old car and two deeply yellowed ones on a fifteen-year-old car are different jobs, and a published number would have to be wrong for one of them. The look is free, the number comes after it, and it does not change on the day.

Where can you do it?

Wherever the car is parked, across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill and the rest of the GTA route. SoloSpa is fully mobile — there is no shop to drive to.

Tell Zachariah the car and your city on the quote form, and say it is the headlights. He answers himself with a firm number and the next open slot — and if replacement is the better call, he will say that instead.
